Islamic history in the World: The Rise of Islam

Islam is the world’s fastest growing religion. It has risen from its humble beginnings in Arabia in the 6th century to become a major global force. With more than 1.6 billion followers, Islam is by far the largest religion in the world today. The history of Islam stretches back over 1,200 years, beginning with the coming of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the year AD 570. The spread of Islam throughout much of Persia and Arabia during this era marked one of the most momentous transformations in human history. Read on to know more about this fascinating world religion and its rise through various phases over the last millennium.

What is Islam?

Islam is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion based on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) which is the world’s second-largest religion . Islam can be understood as an ideological and practical synthesis of various first-century Arabian Arabian traditions of voluntary submission to the divine will, ethical monotheism, and fierce opposition to all forms of idolatry with an emphasis on absolute universality of the moral law for all people and all times. To understand the significance of Islam, it is important to appreciate the religious and cultural background of the people who experienced Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) teachings. The Arabs were at the forefront of the development of human civilization and were the first to develop a written language, a civil society, an economy, consciousness of God, and advanced science. However, the Arabs were also greatly influenced by the pre-Islamic animistic and polytheistic religions of surrounding cultures. This made it almost impossible for them to fully comprehend and accept the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). But no matter how hard the Arabs tried, they could not find any deities worthy of worship other than the One and Only God. Arabs held the concept of One God in high esteem and were very reluctant to accept another God alongside Him.

Spread of Islam

Islam spread quickly throughout the Arabian Peninsula and Persia, both of which lie in present-day western Asia. The fertile crescent, stretching from Egypt to Syria and ending in southern Turkey, was the heart of the Islamic world during this era. Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians (known as “People of the Book”) lived together in peace and harmony under Islamic law. In many places, the harmony was so complete that the People of the Book were referred to as the “People of the Quran.” Jesus is considered the Buddha of the Christians and the Prophet Muhammad is considered the Buddha of the Muslims. Both of them preached the same message of love, peace, equality, and brotherhood. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born in the year AD 570 in the city of Mecca, Arabia. He was a descendant of the Prophet Abraham. As a young man, he left his home in the city of Mecca to travel to various locations preaching the message of one God and inviting people to convert to Islam. He reached Medina in AD 622, where he stayed for a few months before returning to Mecca. He would then leave for another city, visit it for a month or two, and then move on to the next location. The people were initially very wary of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) due to their long-held traditions and beliefs, but they were soon won over by his message of love and peace. Soon after he accepted Islam, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) received the revelation of the Quran, which outlined the path of Truth and Love.

Rise of the Muslims

The Arab armies, led by the Muslim general Muhammad, defeated the Persian forces at the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah in 636 and conquered the rich province of Persia (present-day Iran). The Arabs now controlled the gateway to India and oil deposits in what is now Iraq. The next year, the Arab general Khalid captured Jerusalem, the final Arab stronghold in Palestine, from the Byzantine empire. This defeat, together with the Arab conquest of Persia, weakened the Byzantine empire and made it more vulnerable to outside attack. In AD 637, the first Islamic capital, Madinat al-Salah (Mecca), was established in Arabia. In AD 644, Madinat al-Salah was renamed al-Madinah (Mecca) and the city was declared the new capital of the new Islamic empire.

Three Islamic Sects

The first four caliphs unified the Arab empire and expanded its borders. The empire expanded so rapidly that people soon began to question the importance of the new religion. Different groups emerged to oppose the new religion. Many people were confused and worried by the disunity in Islam. One group tried to resolve the problem by declaring that the Quran was corrupted and that it should be read exactly as it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Others believed that a new prophet should be sent to guide Islam further and bring it into accord with the original teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). These two sects are known as the Sunni and the Shi’a sects of Islam. The Sunni sect is the majority sect of Islam and the Shi’a sect is the second largest.

Decline of Muslims

The Muslim empire was the most advanced and powerful in the world for much of the Middle Ages. The Arabs, however, were ruled by strict rules of law, which made it difficult for them to adapt to changing times. The European powers were developing faster, and they were better able to understand the concept of modern laws and government. The Muslim empires were eventually conquered by the Europeans, who were also developing faster. The Ottoman Empire and the Arabs The Ottoman Empire, which was based in modern-day Turkey, was considered a great power and a superpower during the 15th and 16th centuries. But it slowly lost power and collapsed during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Arabs were once the dominant people of the Middle East, but they were defeated by the Ottoman Turks.

World War I and the Rise to superpower status for the Muslims

By the end of World War I, the Ottoman Empire had been defeated and the Middle East was in turmoil. Two major events took place that would shape the future of the region and the world. The Sykes-Picot agreement, signed in 1916 by France and Britain, divided the Arab lands between France and Britain. The agreement favoured France, leaving Britain with very little in the region. The other event was the Balfour Declaration, in which the British government promised to support a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The Sykes-Picot agreement and the Balfour Declaration formed the basis of the Palestine Mandate, under which a large portion of the land was taken from the Arabs. The British were given the right to govern Palestine, and the Arabs were given little choice in the matter. The Mandate was to last until the year 2030, but was never enforced.

Future outlook for Muslims in the world

The future outlook for Muslims in the world depends largely on their own actions and the actions of their governments. Muslims can help improve their future by participating in democracy and becoming educated about their religion. The more Muslims know about their religion and about modern science, the better off they will be. Muslims can avoid many of the problems that threaten their future by protecting their own heritage and by caring for their fellow citizens. If people follow these guidelines, the future outlook for Muslims will be bright.

Bilal (Ral) : The Symbol Of Equality

Bilal (ral) was one of the few sahabas who were given the news of success (they will enter jannah) before they died.

Once the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “O Bilal, what special deeds you have done that I heard sounds of your walking steps ahead of me in Paradise.” Bilal said, “Whenever I make Wudu (ablution), I offer two units (rakah) of prayer as Tahiyatul Wudu.”

Such was Bilal’s devotion to Islam and piety that he rose to such heights of spiritual attainment.

Introduction

Born in 680CE in Makkah, to his slave parents — Rabah and Hamamah — Bilal too served as slave to a lady close to Umayyah ibn Khalaf, an arch enemy of Islam.
When Umayyah heard about Bilal converting to Islam, he tortured him and forced him to relinquish the new faith. But filled with love of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Islam, Bilal remained steadfast in his faith despite extreme torture and kept saying “Ahad, Ahad.” (Allah is One, Allah is One).

Bilal became one of the most trusted and loyal companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He was among the first few persons to embrace Islam.

A great honor came to Bilal after the Conquest of Makkah in 8 AH. When the city surrendered and all the nobles from the Muslims and the non-Muslims were standing in the courtyard, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) asked Bilal to climb the roof of the Holy Kaaba and give a call of Azaan from the top of it. This was the first Azaan, which was given in Makkah.

Bilal spent his last days in Syria. He died in 18 AH at the age of 64, and was buried at Bab-Al Sagheer near Jama Umavi in Damascus. He served the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) for 25 years
.
Islam raised him to the status that one of the strongmen like Omar bin Khattab addressed him as Saiyydana (our leader).

While on death bed, his wife Hind cried, ‘wa hazanaa’ (what a great grief), to which Bilal replied, ‘Wa Tarabaa’ (what a great joy); “Tomorrow I will meet with my loved ones — Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions,” he is said to have told his wif

Virtues of Fasting And Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam. It is celebrated as the month during which Muhammad received the initial revelations of the Quran, the holy book for Muslims. Fasting is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam.

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating any food, drinking any liquids, smoking cigarettes, and engaging in any sexual activity, from dawn to sunset. That includes taking medication (even if you swallow a pill dry, without drinking any water).

Allah says in the qur'an "O you who believe fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you so that you can learn Taqwa" (Quran 2:183)

there are many benefits of Fasting :

1. There is nothing equal to fasting as it is a means to be admitted into the Paradise.

It was narrated that Abu Umamah said:
I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, tell me of an action (I should do).’ He said: ‘Take to fasting, for there is nothing equal to it.”‘ (Sunan an-Nasa’i)

2. Fasting intercede on behalf of its observers on the Day of Judgment. This is mentioned in Hadith collected by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal in his Musnad.

3.Fasting is means to expiate sins and to have all one’s past sins forgiven.

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

4. Fasting is a reason for happiness in this life and Afterlife.

Abu Hurairah narrated that:
The Messenger of Allah said: “There are two joys for the fasting person: the joy when he breaks his fast, and the joy of when he meets his Lord.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

5. Allah’s reward for fasting is high and it highlights how great fasting is!

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “(Allah said), ‘Every good deed of Adam’s son is for him except fasting; it is for Me. and I shall reward (the fasting person) for it. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

6. The virtue of the smell of the mouth of the person observing fasting

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said “Verily, the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better to Allah than the smell of musk.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

7.The supplication of a fasting person when he breaks his or her fast at sunset is not rejected.

Virtues of Tahajjud Prayer

Tahajjud prayer is an optional/supererogatory prayer performed during the night after waking up from sleep, because the meaning of tahajjud is to give up hujud which means sleep, that is, to give up or leave off sleep. ... The time of Tahajjud prayer is after one wakes up from sleep and before the adhan of Fajr prayer.

Tahajjud rakats are performed in pairs and eight rakats is seen as a good number by many Muslims. In other words, most people will say two, four, six, or eight rakats, though more is not discouraged.

Sleeping is not a pre-requisite for tahajjud. However praying it during the last 1/3 rd of the night is more desirable, rewarding and likened by Allah since that is that time that Allah descends to the last Heaven and asks who is the one that wants their prayers answered, who is the one that want forgiveness…

Now we will look at some of the virtues :

1.  "The dua made during Tahajjud is like an arrow that does not miss it's target" -- Imaam As Shafi

2. It helps you fight your desires

3. It softens the heart and humbles you in front of Allah

4. By performing it, it will bring light to your face and soul

5.  It builds the love of the Hereafter in your heart

6. It makes you closer to Allah

7. A way of getting your sins forgiven

8. It strengthens the Qur’an that you have memorised

Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said, “The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.” [Sahih Muslim]

Night prayer is superior to day prayer because:
It is more concealed and closer to sincerity. The righteous early Muslims (salaf) used to strive hard to hide their secrets [f: i.e. the actions between them and Allah].

Surah Mulk is at the beginning of the 29th Juz and is the 67th surah in the qur'an.
There are some hadiths that emphasize on the importance of Surah Mulk.

The prophet never went to sleep without reciting selected surahs from the quran. one of them was Surah Mulk. This is a sunnah of our prophet and we must strive hard to revive this sunnah among the ummah. I pray each and everyone takes this seriously and prays this every night in order to acquire these benefits. Ameen

Virtues of Miswak / Siwak

VIRTUES OF MISWAK // SIWAK

The miswak (miswaak, siwak, sewak, Arabic: سواك‎ or مسواك) is a teeth cleaning twig made from the Salvadora persica tree (known as arāk, أراك, in Arabic). It is reputed to have been used over 7000 years ago. Miswak is basically a pencil-sized stick 15 to 20 cm long with a diameter of 1 to 1.5 cm from Arak (Salvadora persica) or the Toothbrush tree. They are used as an oral hygiene tool mostly in the Middle Eastern.

But above all it was a SUNNAH of our prophet Muhammed (sal).  the Prophet said, "Were it not (for the fear) of overburdening my Ummah, I would have ordered them to (brush their teeth with) Siwak at every Salat. (Sahih Muslim) A'ishah narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The siwak is a means of purifying the mouth and pleasing the Rabb." (Nasai).
